and Lehigh split doubleheader on Saturday
Game 1: Lehigh 3, Binghamton 0
Game 2: Binghamton 6, Lehigh 4
BETHLEHEM, Pa.--Sophomore pitcher Tom Gaube (Vestal, N.Y.) tossed three scoreless innings of relief and junior outfielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) drove in three runs, helping Binghamton (4-11-1) to a 6-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Lehigh (7-6). In the first game, the Mountain Hawks' Jack Muscalus tossed a three-hitter as Lehigh won 3-0.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats trailed 2-1 until pushing across four runs after there were two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior outfielder Tony Berube (Vestal, N.Y.) tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single, and junior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.) followed with a walk. That loaded the bases for Costello, who promptly smacked a double that scored all three runners.
Gaube entered the game with runners on first and second and nobody out in the fifth inning. Although he allowed a double to score both inherited runners, he escaped any further trouble with a strikeout and fielder's choice. He then retired six of the final eight batters he faced to preserve the win and earn his first career save.
In the opener, Muscalus allowed just three Binghamton hits and improved to 3-0 on the season. Bearcats starter JD Brink (Matamoras, Pa.) took the loss despite inducing 12 groundball outs and retiring the final 13 batters to face him.
The teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, with the first pitch set for noon.
