Immediate Release: February 27, 2004 LYNCHBURG, Va. - Setting foot outdoors the first time this season, Binghamton (0-1) managed just four hits in nine innings and dropped a 6-2 decision to Liberty (1-1) Friday afternoon. The Flames scored single runs in the first and second innings, added three more in the fifth and a final run in the eighth inning to build a 6-0 lead. Binghamton snapped the shutout ona two-run home run by senior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) in the ninth inning. Also scoring was senior right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y.), who had singled. Binghamton starter David Lind (San Mateo, Calif.) scattered six hits in five innings, and allowed three earned runs. He allowed just one extra-base hit (fifth-inning double), but absorbed the loss. Junior Tom Gaube (Vestal, N.Y.) allowed one run in three innings of relief, striking out three and giving up four hits. The Bearcats stranded four runners in the first two innings, and struck out 10 times for the game. The team also committed three errors in the field that led to a pair of unearned Liberty runs. Junior center fielder Whitney Powell (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior second baseman Matt Caputo (Pine Bush, N.Y.) collected BU's other two hits. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single nine-inning game on Sunday. |
