LYNCHBURG, Va. - Binghamton (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with host Liberty University (2-2). The Flames won the opener, 13-7, before Binghamton rallied for a 9-5 win in game 2.
In the opener, Liberty scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to overcome a 4-1 deficit and roll to the victory. The Flames scored in six of eight innings, outhitting the Bearcats, 12-7. Each team committed five errors. Senior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) continued his hot bat, going 2-for-5 with three RBI. Costello belted his second home in as many games - a two-run shot in the third inning. Senior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
In game two, the Bearcats trailed 5-1 in the sixth inning before erupting for eight runs. The big blow was delivered by freshman first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) with the game tied at 5-5. Hitchcock stroked a two-run single up the middle for his first collegiate hit. The rally made a winner out of sophomore reliever Adam Shatkun (Plainview, N.Y.), who allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings.
The Bearcats will play Liberty in the final game of the four-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
