Binghamton baseball pounds Long Island University 12-2
Simek goes 4-for-5 with 2 RBI; Bearcats blow it open with 8 in 8th

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Binghamton (5-4) sent 15 men to the plate in an eight-run eighth inning which turned a close contest into a 12-2 blowout over host Long Island University (3-10) Sunday afternoon from LIU Field.

The Bearcats, which entered the inning nursing a 3-0 lead, scored eight times on four hits. After LIU scored twice in the bottom of the frame, BU added one more in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.

Senior second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI. Simek went long in the seventh inning and added an RBI single in the decisive eighth. Freshman left fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) went 3-for-6 with a two-run shot in the eighth inning. Sophomore catcher Michael Quinn (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with three RBI and senior first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) added two hits and an RBI. Hitchcock, who raised his team-best average to .471, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.

The offense was more than enough for senior pitcher Mike Van Gorder (Vestal, N.Y.), who improved to 2-1 with six scoreless innings. Van Gorder scattered six hits and struck out three, lowering his earned run average to 0.57.

Binghamton concludes its three-game weekend set with an afternoon game against Lafayette.
