VESTAL, N.Y. Junior Kyle Klee (Rochester, N.Y.) drilled a three-run home run and drove in four runs and Binghamton (26-24, 14-7 AE) collected a season-high 20 hits en route to a 12-4 win over visiting Maine (19-27-1, 7-14 AE) Thursday afternoon from Varsity Field. The win was BU's 16th in their last 19 games and moved the team in sole possession of first place in the America East standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
Klee ripped a one-out home run over the left field wall in the first inning and the Bearcats kept up the offense with runs in seven of their eight innings.
Meanwhile on the hill, senior Zach Groh (Reading, Pa.) scattered six hits over seven innings. Groh (5-3) struck out seven, walked one and allowed just an unearned run in the sixth inning. He lowered his season ERA to 3.46.
Klee added a double and went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Senior Ryan James (Wading River, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Already the record-holder for runs in a season, James scored twice to bump his total to 52 runs scored in 50 games. Freshman Jeff Skelhorne-Gross (Mississauga, Ontario) hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Junior Tom Baileys (Apalachin, N.Y.) bumped his team-best average to .368 with a 3-for-4 afternoon. Baileys is hitting .429 against America East foes. Freshman Corey Taylor (Vestal, N.Y.) also went 3-for-4. Feshman Peter Bregartner (East Islip, N.Y.) added two hits and an RBI.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday (two seven-inning games) beginning at noon.
