PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Binghamton (5-7) forced extra-innings with three runs in the seventh, and then rode the stellar pitching performance of sophomore reliever Adam Shatkun (Plainview, N.Y.) to a 7-5 win over host Pace University in 10 innings Saturday afternoon. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but due to the length of the first game, the nightcap was cancelled.
The Bearcats trailed 5-2 heading into their final at-bat, but rallied for three runs on two hits in the seventh. Senior right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y.) delivered a one-out, two-run double to right center, and senior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) followed with an RBI groundout to tie the score.
After the teams played through a pair of scoreless extra-innings, BU struck for the game-winning runs in the top of the 10th inning. Costello drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a fly out. Junior center fielder Whitney Powell (Virginia Beach, Va.) then stroked an RBI single to center, scoring Costello. Powell promptly stole second and came home on an RBI single by junior catcher Chris Darling (Whitesboro, N.Y.), who was 3-for-4 on the day.
Meanwhile on the hill, Shatkun (3-0) breezed through four scoreless innings of relief work to record his team-best third win of the season. The 6-foot-1 right hander allowed just two hits and retired the side in order in the 10th to preserve the win. In the process, Shatkun lowered his earned run average to 2.70 - tops among BU regulars.
Senior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.) homered to lead off the fourth inning - his third round-tripper of the season. Kowalchuk wound up with three RBI for the game, moving him into a tie with Costello for the team lead with 11 RBI apiece.
The teams will play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning affair beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
