Van Gorder sharp as Binghamton baseball stops Radford 8-3
Senior right-hander allows three singles in five scoreless innings

Box Score

RADFORD, Va. - Senior Mike Van Gorder (Vestal, N.Y.) tossed five shutout innings to carry visiting Binghamton (2-4) past Radford University (6-8) 8-3 Sunday afternoon from Dedmon Center Park. The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Bearcats, who dropped the opening two games of the three-game set with the Highlanders.

Van Gorder (1-1) allowed just three singles in five innings of work, struck out three and walked none. In the process, he lowered his season earned run average to 0.93.

The Bearcats scored twice in the second, once in the third and twice more in the fifth inning to open up a 5-0 lead. With Van Gorder out of the game, Radford countered with three runs in the sixth to trim the deficit, but Binghamton answered with one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the final margin.

Senior first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, raising his season batting average to .455. Senior designated hitter Jeff Wertepny (Des Plaines, Ill.) went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) and freshman left fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) had two hits apiece. Simek scored twice and added an RBI.

Binghamton next heads to Philadelphia for the three-game Philadelphia Baseball Bash next weekend. The Bearcats open against Temple at 3 p.m. on Friday.
