Radford, Va.--Senior outfielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J./Cumberland County Coll.) went 3-for-7 with a home run and three RBI as the Binghamton baseball team (2-4) split a doubleheader against Radford (1-7) on Saturday. The Bearcats won the opener 2-1 but fell apart in the nightcap, losing 21-4. Both games were seven innings.

In the first game, Costello belted a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie. On the mound, junior right hander David Lind (San Mateo, Calif./Skyline College) allowed one on five hits and struck out six batters to record the win. Junior Mike Weglinski (Hyde Park, N.Y./FD Roosevelt) hurled a perfect seventh inning to record the save.

In the second game, Costello was part of a two-run first inning as he double home a run to give the Bearcats a 2-0 advantage. After Radford went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning, Binghamton drew even when freshman catcher Pat Haughie (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) belted a RBI double.

From there, however, things fell apart as the Highlanders scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 21-3 lead. Costello had another RBI double in the seventh inning to make the final score 21-4.

Senior right hander Andy Hutchings (Binghamton, N.Y./ College of Charleston) took the loss.

Binghamton and Radford conclude their series with another doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
