VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) has been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region first team, becoming the first Binghamton player to achieve the high honor at the Division I level.

Simek, the only America East player recognized on the first team, was chosen as the top second baseman in the region, which includes 40 teams from nine different conferences.

He completed a stellar four-year collegiate career with a brilliant senior campaign, helping the Bearcats win a school-record 28 games, capture the America East regular season title and earn runnerup postseason honors. Simek, a first team America East all-star and team MVP, batted .363 with a team-high 46 RBI in 43 games. His RBI per game was tops in the America East and he also ranked 32nd in the country in doubles per game (0.4). He had a team-high 22 extra-base hits (17 doubles, five home runs) and also led the team with 12 stolen bases. In the infield, Simek made just eight errors in 203 chances and helped turn 18 double plays.

Simek was explosive down the stretch for the Bearcats, who went 17-5 to win the first regular season conference title in the program's 51-year history. He ended his career with a 12-game hit streak and hit safely in 20 of his last 24 collegiate games. During that 24-game stretch, he batted .412 with 31 RBI. At the America East Championship, Simek led all hitters with a .474 average and drove in seven runs in four games to earn all-tournament honors.

He holds the career record (Division I) for stolen bases and ranks among the program's top three in career batting (3rd, .318), hits (3rd, 192), RBI (T-2nd, 121), and doubles (2nd, 47).

"What a great way to finish off an outstanding senior season and four-year career," head coach Tim Sinicki said. "Without question, Matt absolutely deserved this honor, and all the awards that have come his way this post-season. From the day he said yes to Binghamton, Matt showed a tremendous amount of commitment and dedication to the coaching staff, his teammates and the entire program. I am very proud of Matt and thankful for everything he did during his career as a Bearcat."
