Junior righty likely headed to short-season team in Vancouver

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton pitcher Murphy Smith has signed a professional contract with the Oakland Athletics and will report to the organization's spring training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. for camp this week. Smith, picked in the 13th round in the First-Year Player Draft, will likely be assigned to the Oakland's Class A Short-Season team in Vancouver, B.C.

Players assigned to Vancouver will arrive on Thursday and work out at Nat Bailey Stadium on Friday. The Vancouver Canadians open the 2009 Northwest League season on Saturday, June 20 vs. Everett. The Northwest League is comprised of eight teams (Vancouver, Boise, Eugene, Everett, Salem-Keizer, Spokane, Tri-City and Yakima). The teams play a 76-game schedule that extends into early September. Vancouver placed third in the West Division with a 34-42 record in 2008.
