OLEAN, N.Y. - Binghamton (12-9) plated 13 runs in the game's first seven innings to post a 13-10 victory over host St. Bonaventure (9-11) Thursday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. The nine-inning, non-conference game featured 35 hits (11 extra-base) and 23 runs, and the Bearcats continued their torrid offense, reaching double-figures for the second straight game and fourth time in the last seven contests.
Binghamton jumped on the board early with three runs in the top of the first inning - courtesy of a three-run home run from senior third baseman Jay Balback (Millsboro, Del.). Balback wound up 4-for-6 with a season-high five RBI. During a current seven-game hit streak, he is hitting .483 with 12 RBI.
The Bearcats, who scored in six of the first seven innings, tacked on two more runs in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and their final two in the seventh inning. Holding a 13-4 lead, BU surrendered one run in the eighth and five in the ninth.
Freshman first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) drilled a two-run home run in the second inning, and wound up with three RBI for the second time in the last three games. Senior left fielder Joe Costello (Ventnor, N.J.) also collected a home run - a solo job to lead off the third inning. Costello, who has a team-high seven round-trippers on the season, went 3-for-6 with three runs scored. Senior right fielder T.J. Kowalchuk (Stormville, N.Y.) stroked four singles in a 4-for-6, 1 RBI performance.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Shores (Towanda, Pa./Athens) earned the win - his second of the season. He went five innings and allowed two earned runs. Shores struck out five and scattered six hits.
Binghamton returns to conference play with a three-game series at UMBC this Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
