AMBLER, Pa. Visiting Binghamton (3-8) outhit Temple 11-8 but left 11 runners stranded in a 4-3 loss to the Owls (5-6) Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. The game was the first of three at the Villanova Baseball Tournament.
Senior ace Zach Groh (Reading, Pa.) allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings of work, and absorbed his second loss of the spring. Groh struck out three and walked a pair.
Binghamton nearly took Groh off the hook in each of the final three innings, but left the bases loaded in the seventh, and stranded two runners in both the eighth and ninth innings. The Bearcats had the tying run at third in each of the last two frames.
Sophomore third baseman Brian Ivan (Toronto, Ontario) went 3-for-3 with two RBI to pace the offense. Ivan drilled a two-run double to left center in the second inning to stake BU to a 2-0 lead.
Temple did all its damage off Groh with two outs. The Owls scored two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth - all after two outs. A hit batter and three straight singles accounted for the runs in the third inning. A walk, error and two singles did the damage in the fourth.
Freshman center fielder Corey Taylor (Vestal, N.Y.) had an RBI single inthe sixth inning for BU's final run.
Binghamton continues action at the tournament with a doubleheader at La Salle University beginning at noon on Saturday.
