Vermont 6, Binghamton 1
Vermont 11, Binghamton 0
VESTAL, N.Y.--First-place Vermont (28-10, 13-3 AE) produced 17 runs and 23 hits in Sunday's doubleheader, sweeping host Binghamton (10-36-1, 2-16 AE) 6-1 and 11-0 in an America East doubleheader on Senior Day at West Gym Field.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first game before the Catamounts rallied in the final three innings of the game. Senior outfielder Tony Berube (Vestal, N.Y.) doubled with one out in the third inning and freshman shortstop Justin Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) followed with an infield hit. Berube scored when Smucker's hit was misplayed by the third baseman.
Freshman third baseman Jay Iannoni (Foxboro, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) led off the Vermont fifth inning with a single, and eventually advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and groundout. Junior infielder Dean Geoffrey (Meriden, Conn./Platt) followed with an RBI single, and then stole second to put himself in scoring position on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Bobby Tewksbary (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne).
Iannoni hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, while Tewksbary added his second RBI of the game in the seventh inning. Junior first baseman Barry Chamberland (Bellows Falls, Vt.) also had an RBI single.
Sophomore pitcher Derek Miller (Pelham, N.H.) limited Binghamton to just two hits over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking just one in his fourth win of the season.
The second game began as a pitchers' duel before the Catamounts plated two runs in the fourth inning and exploded for nine runs in the fifth. Iannoni, who homered in every game in the series, led off the fourth with a solo shot and freshman infielder Chris Marsh (Briston, Conn./Bristol Eastern) later hit a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth inning, Vermont drew two walks to start the inning before senior outfielder Jeff Barry (Essex Junction, Vt./Exxex) singled through the right side to drive home the first run. Another run scored on a throwing error before Iannoni singled and freshman outfielder Kyle Brault (Milton, Vt.) launched a three-run homer. After Marsh singled, junior outfielder Derek Root (Guilford, Vt./Brattleboro Union) connected on his first home run of the season.
Barry wound up going 4-for-5 and drove in two runs in the second game as the Catamounts banged out 13 hits. Senior pitcher Jeff Dixon (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) tossed six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and striking out four without a walk.
The Bearcats will conclude the season next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against conference foe Northeastern. Game time on Saturday and Sunday in Boston is set for noon.
NOTES: The first game was halted for two hours in the bottom of the third inning as severe thunderstorms moved through the region.
