Binghamton baseball suffers doubleheader sweep at Utah Valley State
Sixth inning haunts Bearcats twice in 12-6 and 13-4 losses

OREM, Utah - Host Utah Valley State (10-17) pounded Binghamton (6-8) pitching for 30 hits and 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday night from Wolverine Stadium. The hosts won the opener 12-6 and completed the sweep with a 13-4 victory in game 2.

In game one, BU led 6-5 before surrendering seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Utah Valley State strung together two triples, a double and three singles, and also benefited from four walks and a balk.

Senior shortstop Justin Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. He belted a three-run home run in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth.

The Bearcats led 6-3 before Utah Valley State scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run and RBI double off senior starter Mike Van Gorder (Vestal, N.Y.). Van Gorder allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings.

In the nightcap, two Wolverine pitchers held the Bearcats to seven hits in nine innings, and Utah Valley State blew the game wide open with six runs in the sixth inning. One night after allowing nine runs in the sixth inning of a loss to BYU, Binghamton gave up seven runs in the sixth inning of game 1 and six more in the sixth frame of game 2.

Senior designated hitter Jeff Wertepny (Des Plaines, Ill.) and senior right fielder Jeff Monaco (Binghamton, N.Y.) collected two hits apiece. Wertepny went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Monaco was 2-for-4.

The Bearcats open America East play with a four-game set at Albany this weekend. The opening nine-inning game is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday.
