BURLINGTON, Vt.– Visiting Binghamton (21-23, 9-6 AE) won the opener in its final at-bat and held off Vermont (21-19, 7-8 AE) in the final frame of game two to claim a pair of one-run victories, 3-2 and 6-5, Saturday afternoon from Centennial Field. With the two wins, BU strengthened its hold on second place in the tight America East standings.

In the opener, the Bearcats were one out away from a 2-0 loss before senior second baseman Ryan James (Wading River, N.Y.) drilled a two-out, bases-clearing double in the seventh inning. In the inning, junior designated hitter Tom Baileys (Apalachin, N.Y.) hit a one-out single, freshman catcher C.J. Lukaszewski (Kingston, N.Y.) walked and freshman center fielder Corey Taylor (Vestal, N.Y.) singled, loading the bases for James, who sent a shot over the head of the Vermont left fielder. Taylor just beat the throw to the plate to give BU the 3-2 margin.

Junior reliever Greg Lane (Binghamton, N.Y.) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to earn the save.

Junior lefty Jeff Dennis (North Syracuse, N.Y.) notched his third win of the season with six strong innings. Dennis allowed just two hits and no earned runs, as three BU errors contributed to the 2-0 hole.

James went 3-for-4 and Baileys went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, BU snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to build a 6-2 lead before Vemont mounted a late rally. The Catamounts plated two runs in the sixth and another in the bottom of the seventh before stranding the tying run on third base to end the game.

Junior first baseman Ryan Holley (Frankfort, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman right fielder Peter Bregartner (East Islip, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In that fifth inning, sophomore left fielder Joe Charron (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) laced an RBI double, Holley delivered an RBI single and freshman third baseman Brian Ivan (Toronto, Ontario) lifted a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Bregartner hit an RBI single.

Vermont scored twice in the bottom of the sixth before sophomore righty Murphy Smith (Clifton Park, N.Y.) limited the damage with a key 6-4-3 double play groundout. Smith worked six innings for his team-high fifth win of the season.

Lane entered in the seventh and the Catamounts worked a single, walk and sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. A run-scoring groundout cut BU's lead to 6-5 and put the tying run on third. But Lane induced an infield pop-up to end game. He now has nine saves and a 1.65 ERA.

The teams conclude their series with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
