LEXINGTON, Va. - Virginia Military Academy (14-7) spotted Binghamton (4-7) two runs before scoring the game's final six en route to a 6-2 victory in the final game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon. The Keydets trailed 2-0 before plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning. VMI then scored three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth. Three Keydets pitchers shut down the Bearcats on four hits.
Freshman first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the third inning - his first collegiate round-tripper. Senior second baseman Matt Caputo (Pine Bush, N.Y.) drove in the other run with a second inning sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher David Lind (San Mateo, Calif.) absorbed the loss despite collecting seven strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs in 6.2 innings. In the process, he lowered his earned run average to 3.06. The Bearcats were hurt by a season-high four errors, which led to three unearned VMI runs.
Binghamton next travels to Lehigh for a four-game set against the Mountain Hawks on Saturday and Sunday.
