NILES, Ohio - Binghamton (5-15-1) suffered three losses in a weekend series against Youngstown State (11-9), falling 3-1 and 5-0 in Saturday's twinbill, and 12-7 in Sunday's nine-inning finale.
On Saturday, BU received a strong pitching outing from junior J.D. Brink, but managed just one run in the 3-1 game-one defeat. Brink allowed just three hits and struck out six in six innings, but issued seven walks. Junior left fielder Joe Costello stroked an RBI single in the first inning for Binghamton's lone run. Youngstown State scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Jay Balback went 2-for-3 for BU. In game two, the Bearcats were held to three hits, and the host Penguins plated single runs in the first and second innings, and three in the fourth inning.
On Sunday, BU led 7-3 after five innings before Youngstown State scored the game's final nine runs. The Penguins scored twice in the sixth inning, tied the game with two runs in the seventh, and tacked on five decisive runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Offensively, BU was led by junior center fielder T.J. Kowalchuk, who went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Freshman shortstop Justin Smucker also drove in two runs. Sophomore catcher Chris Darling went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
