men's golf places fourth at America Sky Championship
named America Sky Player of the Year for second straight season
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Binghamton University golf team
posted a final round total of 303 en route to a fourth-place
finish out of 12 teams at the America Sky Championship Wednesday.
Senior Jake Katz was named the America
Sky Player of the Year, capturing the honor for the second straight
Weber State fired a 287 in the final round to claim the team
title and prevent a wire-to-wire victory by Sacramento State.
Weber State's Nick Despain secured medalist honors on the strength
of a 54-hole total of 215.
"It was one of those days where we had high hopes but just
missed a few putts here and there and struggled to score,"
head coach Bernie Herceg said. "It was definitely our most
consistent tournament of the year where we played three solid
rounds, but unfortunately we didn't have one of those rounds
that gave us some momentum we could feed off of."
Junior Mike Surdey led the Bearcats
with an eighth-place finish out of 59 competitors. Surdey improved
his score each day at Troon North Golf Club, carding a 76-74-73
over the three days for his second top-10 showing of the season.
He was named to the second team of the conference's All-Tournament
A co-captain and the squad's No. 1, Katz finished in 12th place
following a 54-hole total of 226. Katz has posted nine top-10
finishes, five runner-up performances and an individual title
during his senior campaign. Through 27 rounds, Katz has registered
a scoring average of 72.29.
Freshman Bryce Edmister notched his
third top-20 performance of the season with a three-day total
Sophomore David Cellura carded a 54-hole
total of 231, while senior co-captain Andrew
Marler managed a 238 in his final collegiate competition.
The America Sky Championship culminated a 2010-11 campaign that
featured two individual titles and nine top-10 finishes for the
