HAMILTON, N.Y. - Another season began for the Binghamton University golf team, and despite new faces and a new coach, the winning tradition continued at the Colgate Invitational. Under first-year head coach Nick Lasky, the Bearcats captured the 21-team, two-day event by 11 strokes over runner-up Loyola. Binghamton shot rounds of 291-293=584 at the par-72 Seven Oaks Golf Course. Loyola went 299-296=595, followed by Lafayette (598), Lehigh (599) and American (601) in the top-5. It was the fourth consecutive team victory for the Bearcats at the Colgate event.
"It's a great way to start off the year," Lasky said. "We have a lot of talent on this team."
Individually, sophomore Brad Moulton (Orangeville, Ontario) placed fifth out of 106 golfers after carding rounds of 74-71=145. In Sunday's final round, Moulton produced five birdies, including three in a four-hole span on the back nine. His 1-under round left him just two strokes behind medalist Will Shriver of Loyola.
Senior Keith Hendrickson (Syosset, N.Y.) shot 73-73=146 to tie for sixth place. Senior captain Eric Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) and freshman Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) each tied for 17th place with 149 totals. Vinal (77-72) carded an even-par 72 on Sunday, collecting four birdies on the front side. Wolniewicz (70-79) sizzled on Saturday, collecting four birdies en route to a 2-under 70.
Sophomore Kevin Crawford (Lockport. N.Y.) shot 74-77=151 to tie for 28th place. His opening-round 74 featured 14 consecutive pars to open play.
Binghamton heads to New Britain, Conn. next weekend for the Central Connecticut Invitational. There, the Bearcats will likely see several of their District I rivals, making this tournament an important one for both the early-season rankings and spring NCAA consideration.
