HAMILTON, N.Y. - Binghamton University golf opened its 2006-07 season with a runner-up showing at the 17-team Colgate Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday at the par 72 Seven Oaks Golf Course. The Bearcats shot rounds of 296-300=596 to finish three strokes behind tournament champion Bucknell (298-295=593). St. Francis (602), Central Connecticut State (608) and Cornell (609) rounded out the top five.
"It was a solid effort by our team. The tournament featured a good field, with Bucknell, St. Francis and us having advanced to the NCAA regionals last spring."
In his collegiate debut, freshman Patrick Donovan (Oswego, N.Y.) fired rounds of 73-73=146 to place fifth out of 85 golfers. Donovan finished three shots behind the medalist from Le Moyne. Senior Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.) and junior Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied for seventh. Wolniewicz shot 73-76=149 and Vinal came in with 75-74=149. Junior J.J. Shearer (Binghamton, N.Y.) tied for 20th overall (75-77=152) and senior Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) carded rounds of 78-77=155 to tie for 31st.
"Patrick did pretty well for himself," coach Nick Lasky said of Donovan's first college tournament. "He hit 28 of a possible 36 greens in regulation."
Binghamton nexts competes at the Rutgers Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
