Golf finishes third out of 14 at ECAC Championship
CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- Binghamton golf staked itself to a 10-stroke lead halfway through the ECAC Division I Championship but had to settle for third place after a final-round 317 at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club. The Bearcats shot 283-317=600 to finish behind St. Bonaventure (293-303=596) and Sacred Heart (301-297=598) in the 14-team field. Binghamton appeared on its way to a team title after a sizzling 1-under opening round. But no Bearcat went lower than 78 in Sunday's final round and BU was caught by both St. Bonaventure and Sacred Heart. Binghamton did hold off perennial NCAA tournament team and host Rhode Island (fourth) and UConn (fifth).
Sophomore Patrick Donovan (Oswego, N.Y.) shot 68-78=146 to pace the Bearcats. Senior Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted rounds of 70-78=148, freshman Mike Surdey (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 73-78=151 and freshman Jake Katz (Williamsville, N.Y.) shot 72-83=155.
Binghamton next competes at the Mt. St. Mary's Fall Classic on October 19-20.
