HAUGHTON, La. Binghamton golf shot a final-round 291 (+3) to leapfrog host Centenary and capture the Hal Sutton Invitational, contested Monday and Tuesday at the par 72 Olde Oaks Golf Club. The Bearcats came in with rounds of 290-301-291=882 to beat Centenary (887) and the rest of the six-team field. Binghamton trailed the Gents by four strokes heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Junior Jake Katz shot 72-72-74=218 (+2) to finish in second place individually. Katz was two strokes behind medalist Nick Faitz of Centenary. Senior Patrick Donovan tied for fifth place (70-79-72=221), junior Mike Surdey placed 10th (75-77-71=223), freshman David Cellura was 11th (74-77-74=225) and junior Andrew Marler tied for 14th in the field (74-75-80=229).
The team title was BU's second of the 2009-10 season. The Bearcats won the Cornell Invitational back in the fall.
The Bearcats next compete at the Lafayette Invitational on April 10-11.
