VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton golf will return to the NCAA Championship for the third time in four years, the school learned Monday evening. Head coach Nick Lasky's team received an at-large berth and will compete at the East Regional on May 18-20 at Lake Nona Golf Course in Orlando, Fla.
"I was very pleased at how the guys responded this spring and kept believing in themselves and working hard," Lasky said. "Things came together for us at the right time. It's an honor to be representing Binghamton and District I at the regional."
Binghamton, the No. 1 team in the New England region, was alloted the No. 27 seed at a regional that features eight of the top 20 teams in the country, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 5 UCLA. The other teams to gain berths from the Northeast were 22nd-seeded Rhode Island and 26th-seeded Army. The Bearcats earned the bid with back-to-back tournament titles this spring. The team captured the New England Championship on April 13-14 and followed that with a championship at the Rhode Island Invitational two weeks later. Both tournament fields included all the regional contenders. Binghamton's resume also was enhanced with a runnerup showing in the fall at the Yale MacDonald Cup.
Junior No. 1 man Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.) leads the team with a 75.2 scoring average. He tied for first at the New England Championship after shooting 68-73. Junior Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) is next with a 75.4 average. Sophomore Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.), who tied for second at the Rhode Island Invitational, is at 75.8. Senior Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.), who will be making his third NCAA appearance, holds a 76.3 average. Junior Matt Mattingly (Manlius, N.Y.) has a 77.4 average.
The 54-hole regional - one of three being held across the country - will begin on Thursday, May 18. The top 10 teams at each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, held May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.
