in fourth place after first day of competiton at New England
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Binghamton opened play in the first round of the exclusive New England Championship on Saturday, and stand in fourth place heading into the final day of competition. As a team, the Bearcats shot a round of 303 on Saturday, finishing behind host Rhode Island (293), the University of Hartford (297) and Army (302). Rounding out the top 10 were Yale University (310), University of Connecticut (310), Dartmouth (312), Boston College (312), Central Connecticut (314) and Harvard (316).
"Overall, we had a pretty good round," head coach John Affleck said. "It was a very difficult round, and because of torrential rain yesterday we had played just four practice holes coming into the round. We are right in the hunt and we will try to catch Hartford and Army tomorrow, but are pleased to be in front of Yale and Connecticut heading into the final round."
Individually, freshman Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.) carded a 74 to finish in 10th place, just two strokes off the lead.
Juniors Joe Kunz (Webster, N.Y.) and Keith Hendrickson (Syosset, N.Y.) each shot a 75, while senior captain Adam Fuchs (Plainview, N.Y./JFK-Plainview) finished with a 79.
"For a freshman, Kevin [Crawford] is playing some big-time golf," Affleck said. "Joe [Kunz] and Keith [Hendrickson] also had great rounds."
The Bearcats tee off in the final round on Sunday at 11 a.m. Binghamton will be grouped in foursomes with members of the top three teams.
