vault to second place on final day of New England Championship
Day 1 Recap
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Binghamton entered the final round of play at the New England Championship in fourth place after shooting a round of 303 on Saturday. That changed on Sunday, as the Bearcats shot the low round of the day, coming in with a 293 to finish with a two-day total of 303-293=596, second to only host Rhode Island. The tournament was played at Triggs Memorial GC in Providence.
The Bearcats nearly erased a 10-stroke gap between themselves and the Rams, who had shot a 293 on Saturday. Rhode Island came back with a 299 on Sunday and won the tournament with a two-day total of 293-299=592, four strokes ahead of BU. Binghamton jumped to second place by passing America East foe Hartford and district rival Army in the 19-team field. Hartford finished with a team score of 297-304=601, while Army shot a 302-299=601.
"This was an incredible effort for our team," head coach John Affleck said. "I think it is safe to say that it was our most significant tournament finish since moving up to Division I and it strengthens our chances of being ranked high enough in the district to possibly earn an NCAA Tournament berth."
Individually for Binghamton, junior Keith Hendrickson (Syosset, N.Y.) carded a 72 on Sunday to finish in a tie for fifth place with a two-day total of 75-72=147. He was six strokes behind medalist Joe Vannelli of Fairfield, who shot a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to finish at 72-69=141.
Freshman Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.) tied for 10th place with a score of 74-76=150, while senior captain Adam Fuchs (Plainview, N.Y./JFK-Plainview) recovered from an opening round of 79 to finish 79-72=151. Junior Joe Kunz (Webster, N.Y.) had the kickout score of 79 on Sunday, but finished with a two-day total of 75-79=154. Freshman Brad Moulton (Orangeville, Ontario) carded a 73 on Sunday to finish 82-73=155.
The Bearcats are in action next weekend at the prestigious Rhode Island Invitational. The tournament will be held at Newport National CC in Kingston, R.I.
