PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - One week after winning the New England Championship in Providence, Binghamton golf had another strong showing in the state of Rhode Island, capturing the 12-team Rhode Island Northeast Spring Invitational, contested Saturday and Sunday at the Green Valley Country Club. The Bearcats followed up their first-round 312 with a final-round 299 to win by 15 strokes over runnerup and host Rhode Island (626). Dartmouth (630), Army (631) and Central Connecticut State (637) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) shot 74-75=149 to tie for second place among 60 golfers. Senior Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.) tied for fourth place (75-77=152) and junior Matt Mattingly (Manlius, N.Y.) tied for 10th place (82-75=157).
Junior No. 1 man Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.) knocked 15 shots off his opening round to lead BU's final-day charge. Wolniewicz shot 1-over 72 to finish in a tie for 15th place (87-72=159). Junior Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) shot 81-80=161 to tie for 24th place.
Binghamton heads to Bolton, Mass. for the 36-hole America East Championship Monday and Tuesday.
