Men's golf places ninth out of 13 teams at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Plyaing without its No. 1 man, Binghamton golf shot 299-286-299 and struggled to a ninth place showing at the 13-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the par-71 Rutgers Golf Course. Columbia won the 54-hole event with a score of 852, followed by St. John's (856), Rutgers (863), Longwood (870), Delaware (874), Hartford (876), UConn (878), Cincinnati (882), BU and Villanova (890) to round out the top 10.

Junior Aaron Ungvarsky (Wilmington, Mass.) was BU's lone player in the top 10. Ungvarsky fired rounds of 70-69-76=215 to tie for ninth place in the field of 71. He was just one shot off the lead after Friday's opening 36 holes, and wound up seven behind medalist Joe Mclister of Delaware (208). Ungvarsky racked up 12 birdies in the three rounds and had the second-best par 4 scoring in the tournament (3.93).

Sophomore Ryan Gabel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) tied for 34th after shooting 73-72-77=222. He produced the fifth-most pars (37) in the field. Sophomore Zach Vinal (Syracuse, N.Y.) was in a tie for 42nd place (75-75-75=225), senior Kevin Crawford (Lockport, N.Y.) tied for 50th (81-70-77=228) and junior Matt Mattingly (Manlius, N.Y.) shared 52nd place (81-77-71=229).

The Bearcats played without junior No.1 man Jeff Wolniewicz (West Seneca, N.Y.), who is nursing an injury.

Binghamton next plays at the St. John's Invitational at Bethpage Red on September 23-24.
