VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton University golfer J.J. Shearer (Binghamton, N.Y.) is one of 156 golfers beginning play Monday at the 2007 United States Amateur Public Links Championship, contested at Cantigny Golf Course, a par 72 course in Wheaton, Ill. The format features 18 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday before the field is trimmed to the low 64 scores. Match play begins on Wednesday and concludes with a 36-hole championship match on Saturday.
Shearer qualified for the event by capturing the Hopewell Junction, N.Y. qualifier last month. At the James Baird State Park course, Shearer fired a 3-under 139 to win by 10 strokes.
He has also qualified for the New York State Amateur Championship, held July 17-21 at Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford.
