men's golf posts two-day total of 627 at Wildcat Invitational
and Surdey tally pair of top-20 performances
MALVERN, Pa. -- The Binghamton University golf team finished
with a 15th place showing out of twenty teams at the Wildcat
Invitational, hosted by Villanova University at the par-71, 7,009-yard
White Manor Country Club Sunday and Monday. BU posted a 36-hole
total of 627 on rounds of 316 and 311.
"We were hoping to turn things around and post some better
scores following the first round," head coach Bernie Herceg
said. "Everyone was out there trying their hardest, but
it was one of those tournaments where we just didn't have it."
The University of Delaware swept the team and individual title
as the Blue Hens placed three players in the top-10. Kevin McLister
earned medalist honors on the strength of a 139 (-3), while the
team shot a 579 (+11), two strokes ahead of Towson University.
The Bearcats started Monday's final round on No. 10. BU's first
nine holes featured several difficult pin locations on a mild,
but breezy day.
Senior co-captain Jake Katz led the squad
in scoring for the eleventh straight tournament, dating back
to last season. Katz posted identical rounds of 74 for a two-day
total of 148 (+6) and an eleventh-place finish. He narrowly missed
his 12th straight top-10 finish, which would have bumped him
up to second-place all-time in program history for top-10 performances.
Katz climbed the leaderboard early as he played his first five
holes in 2-under-par fashion. Despite committing a double-bogey
at the par-4 18th, Katz turned in an even 36 on his front side.
Three straight bogeys at Nos. 1-3 hampered his bid for a late
charge, but he played the final six holes at even-par.
Junior Mike Surdey, who was competing
in the individual portion of the event, recorded an impressive
showing of 149 (+7), good for a 13th-place finish. Surdey managed
a 1-over-par 72 in the opening round, pitting him at fifth place
at the start of Monday's final round. After three holes, Surdey
was 4-over, but responded with birdies at the par-4 13th and
15th. He played the final 12 holes at 4-over en route to his
Sophomore David Cellura registered
Binghamton's second best team score with rounds of 80-78. Consecutive
birdies down the stretch at the par-4 fourth and fifth allowed
Cellura to drop his score to 5-over with four to play. He gave
those two strokes back with bogeys at the par-3 eighth and par-4
ninth to close with a 78 (+7).
Freshman Bryce Edmister carded a
similar two-day total as Cellura with rounds of 80-79. The newcomer
made the turn at 6-over, but played a steady back side in 2-over
The Bearcats are back in action Friday for the Rutherford Intercollegiate,
