BU men's basketball uses big first half to cruise past Maine 84-56
Bearcats open up 24-point halftime lead, improve to 7-3 in league play

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. - After playing five consecutive games that went down to the final possession, Binghamton (10-11, 7-3 America East) took the drama out of the game early Sunday afternoon, building a 24-point halftime bulge en route to an 84-56 win over Maine (9-13, 4-7 AE) at the Events Center. The Bearcats closed out the half on a 29-9 run and never looked back in snapping a two-game losing streak.

Senior captains Andre Heard (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Sebastian Hermenier (Rockville, Md.) scored 21 and 18 points respectively, and BU shot a season-best 53% to solidify its hold on second place in the America East - 1 1/2 games behind league-leading Albany.

"It was a good game," head coach Al Walker said. "We played a very strong first half. The second half was a little sloppy but a lot of guys had a chance to play. Overall, it was a terrific defensive effort and I'm glad we were able to put some points up on the board. It's nice to get off that two-game losing skid."

Binghamton scored the game's first six points and held the Black Bears to just seven field goals in the first period (26%). Heard scored 17 of his points in that opening frame. He nailed his first five shots and 7-of-10 for the half.

In the second half, BU's lead swelled to as many as 33 points.

Sophomore point guard Mike Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) was BU's third player in double figures with 12 points. Gordon hit 5-of-9 from the floor and added six assists.

Maine was led by Philippe Bofia Tchekane, who scored 16 points.

Binghamton next hosts New Hampshire Wednesday night.

The 84 points are the most BU has ever scored in the Events Center, breaking the mark of 76 set during last year's America East quarterfinal win over Albany. It also is the fourth-highest total in BU's Division I tenure... The 28-point margin of victory tied the largest home margin, originally established against Hartford last year.
