BU men's basketball releases 2011-12 non-conference schedule
Six games against teams with 20+ wins, trip to Missouri highlight slate

2011-12 Non-Conference Schedule

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton University men's basketball will face a challenging non-conference slate in 2011-12. The team's 12 non-conference games were announced today and six opponents had 20 or more wins this season and five played in national postseason tournaments.

"I think our schedule is befitting a team trying to prepare itself for our conference," head coach Mark Macon said. "We will play some good teams throughout the country, including a handful that were in the NCAA tournament."

The 13 opponents averaged nearly 16 wins a season in 2010-11, led by Morehead State (25), Bucknell (25) and Missouri (23). Hostra (21), Drexel (21) and St. Peter's (20) are the other 20-win teams from 2010-11 that BU will face this coming winter.

After a home exhibition game on November 7, BU will host Patriot League member Colgate in the season-opener on November 12. The Raiders have won six of the eight all-time meetings, though BU posted a 62-60 win in last season's opener.

Five straight away games follow the Colgate opener. A short trip up the road to Ivy League member Cornell begins the stretch on November 14. Next will be a trip to New York City and a November 18 game at Atlantic 10 foe Fordham, where BU's strong alumni base is expected to be out in full force. Two days later, BU will face the reigning MAAC champions in St. Peter's. The Peacocks beat BU 61-56 in the Events Center last December and went on to earn a No. 14 seed into the 2011 NCAA tournament, where they lost to Purdue in the opening round.

In the marquee road game of the season, the Bearcats will take their lone flight of the season and head to Columbia, Mo. to face Big 12 member Missouri on November 27. The Tigers went 23-11 last season and reached the Big 12 quarterfinals before earning a No. 11 seed to the NCAA tournament.

Binghamton will then play five of its final seven non-conference games at home during the month of December. Back-to-back home games against Patriot League members Army (Dec. 3) and Bucknell (Dec. 6) begin the stretch. The Bearcats will try to avenge losses to both teams during the 2010-11 campaign. The Bison went 25-9 and won their conference crown en route to a No. 14 seed for the NCAA tournament.

After a tough away game at CAA member Hofstra on December 17, BU will face a Morehead State team that went 25-10 and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010-11. The Ohio Valley Conference champions earned the No. 13 seed and posted a stunning upset of No. 4 Louisville in the opening round. One-time America East member Hofstra, 3-0 all-time against BU, won 21 games last winter and was selected to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

Another tough matchup awaits three days later when CAA member Drexel comes to the Events Center. The Dragons were 21-10 last season and saw their promising postseason end at the buzzer in the CAA quarterfinals. Along the way, Drexel delt BU a 40-point loss in Philadelphia.

At the very end of the calendar year, BU will face a pair of MAAC opponents. A rare trip to Western New York to face Canisius (Dec. 28) and a home date with Manhattan (Dec. 30) close out the non-conference slate.

"This schedule will make for an exciting year for what will be a young Bearcats team in 2011-12," Macon said. "We will continue to move forward and strive toward a successful season."

The 16-game America East portion of the schedule begins in early January and culminates with the conference tournament on March 1-4 in Hartford. The league will release the full 2011-12 schedule and the tournament host at a later date.
