VESTAL, N.Y. -- After a record-setting performance in a road win at Albany, senior guard Mike Gordon (Plainfield, N.J.) has been named the America East Player of the Week for January 7-13.
Gordon drained 8-of-11 three-pointers and struck for 32 points in BU's 71-57 win at Albany on Saturday. He also produced 19 points at Hartford on Wednesday for a two-game scoring average of 25.5.
From the start-to-finish, Gordon had an answer for everything the host Great Danes threw at him. He connected on five straight field goals to open the game, including four-of-four from beyond the arc, and scored 14 of his team's first 16 points and 20 of BU's first 26 points. Then after Albany rallied to tie the game in the second half, Gordon ignited an 11-2 run with a pair of long-range shots, the second from more than 30-feet out as the shot clock was winding down.
"Gordon is the best point guard in our league," Albany coach Will Brown said after the game. "We let a good player get in a rhythm. And when you let good players get in the rhythm, the basket looks bigger and bigger and bigger. Even down the stretch when we did a decent job on him, he made tough shots."
In league play, Gordon is averaging 22.3 points per game and shooting an impressive 61.8 percent from the floor, including a 65.2% mark (15-23) from beyond the arc. He has scored in double figures in five straight games and eight of his last nine. On the season, he is scoring at a 12.5 point per game clip in a team-high 36.1 minutes of action.
The Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, hosting Stony Brook at 7 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on Fox Sports New York (FSNY).
