|Bearcats' defense puts clamps on Hartford, 55-52|
VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton (8-6, 3-1 AE) held visiting Hartford to just 31% shooting, and did enough at the offensive end to post a 55-52 victory over the Hawks (7-7, 3-1 AE) in an America East Conference game Wednesday night. The win was Binghamton's third in a row and fourth in the last five games.
"We defended hard and battled on the glass," BU head coach Al Walker said. "To have Anthony (Green) shoot 1-for-13 and we still win... We did a great job defensively."
The Bearcats, who led by nine at the break, saw that lead evaporate midway through the second half. Hartford went on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 38-38 all with 10:40 to play. Binghamton then replied with a 12-4 run that spanned 8:38 to go up 50-42, with 2:02 remaining. Seniors Jeffrey St. Fort (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) and Anthony Green (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown) each scored four points during that stretch.
Up eight with 1:40 to play, BU survived five missed free throws in the final 38 seconds to hand Hartford its first conference defeat of the season.
Green, BU's leading scorer at 18 points per game, struggled through his worst shooting night of the season. The flashy guard missed 12 of 13 shots from the field, but still contributed nine points and six rebounds.
Binghamton received a season-high 15 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Brandon Carter (McPherson, Kan./McPherson), who hit 6-of-11 from the field. Carter pulled down six offensive boards, and added two steals and a block. St. Fort wound up with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Hartford was led by junior Jerrell Parker and senior Josh Odugbela, who each netted 11.
Binghamton next travels to Orono, Maine for another America East game, Saturday against UMaine.
