BU signs 6-foot-8 junior college player from Montana

Binghamton University men’s basketball coach Al Walker has corralled another big man from the West. One year after nabbing seven-foot Alaska Player of the Year Nick Billings, Walker and his staff signed Jason Kearns to a national letter of intent Wednesday. The 6-foot-8, 260-pound forward plays for Miles City Community College in Montana, and will arrive at Binghamton next fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

“We’re overjoyed that Jason has decided to join our program,” head coach Al Walker said. “He has the size and strength to secure the low post, and has terrific quickness for a big man. I’m counting on Jason to replace Joost Ooms next season.”

For Miles City CC last year, Kearns started and averaged 10.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. He shot 53% from the field. In eight games this season, he has lifted those numbers to 16.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest.

“Jason’s best days are ahead,” Miles City coach Shawn Neary said. “He is a force in the paint, and has an excellent work ethic. He will only get better.”

In high school, Kearns was a first team all-state and first team all-conference selection for Corvallis High School (Mt.).
