VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton (3-3) built a 16-point halftime lead and eased past visiting Long Island University, 71-63, in its home opener in front of a capacity crowd of 2,275 Friday night at West Gym.
The Bearcats used a 13-2 run to stake a 43-27 lead at the break, and led by a dozen or more throughout the second half. Three players reached double figures, led by junior forward Alex Adediran (Covington, Ga./Seward County CC), who scored a game-high 14 points - all in the first half. Using a height advantage in the post, Adediran hit 6-of-10 shots, and pulled down five rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. Classmate Joe White (Winsted, Conn./The Gilbert School) scored a career-high 13 points with six rebounds, and freshman point guard Troy Hailey (Hyattsville, Md./Montrose Christian) added 11 points.
Long Island received 10 points apiece from freshman guard James Williams (DeSoto, Texas) and junior forward Derek Bell (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Blackbirds shot just 32% from the floor, and 56% from the free throw line.
Binghamton next travels to Easton, Pa. on Sunday to face Lafayette. Tip-off time is 1 p.m.
