Point guard Lucas to leave men's basketball team

Junior point guard Darel Lucas (Wichita, Kan./Redlands CC, Okla.) has taken an indefinite leave from the men's basketball team, the school announced today. Lucas, who came to Binghamton this fall from Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma, will focus solely on his academic studies for the remainder of the semester before making a final decision on his standing with the team.

"Darel is going to take some time away from the program," head coach Al Walker said. "He's a long way from home, and it's been a heck of a challenge for him. He's going to talk to his family over break and figure out what's next. We're supporting him 100 percent."

Lucas, who was recruited to be the starting point guard, struggled early on this season and was averaging just 11.5 minutes of playing time in BU's first five games. In two seasons at Redlands, Lucas led the Cougars to a combined 62-8 record, including a NJCAA Division II championship in 2001-02. As a sophomore, he was tabbed as the ninth best junior college point guard in the country by The Sporting News.

The Bearcats (2-3) will continue with freshman Troy Hailey (Hyattsville, Md./Montrose Christian) at the starting point guard role. Hailey is third on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game.
