|BU basketball opens with Late Nite Madness celebration|
The Binghamton University mens and womens basketball teams will usher in the 2002-03 season Friday evening, as the athletics department hosts its fifth annual Late Nite Madness celebration, beginning at 11 p.m. (doors open at 10:30 p.m.) in the West Gym. Both teams will take to the floor at the stroke of midnight, and the mens team will offer its annual Slam Dunk Contest. Last years Madness event attracted more than 2,000 students.
Prior to the teams being introduced at midnight, there will be an array of contests, prize giveaways and performances. The kickline, cheer team and dance team will perform, along with The Vibrations vocal group. Sodexho Marriott will give away a semester meal plan worth more than $1000, Barnes and Noble will be giving away a $250 gift certificate, and four lucky students will scramble around the West Gym floor blindfolded in the $750 Mad-Dash-4-Ca$h Contest. In addition, 500 t-shirts will be thrown into the crowd throughout the evening, and cell phones will also be given away. Fans will be treated to free popcorn and soda all night long.
Thrilla the Gorilla, the NBA mascot of the Utah Jazz, will entertain the crowd with his acrobatics, including his repertoire of trampoline slam dunks. University President Lois B. DeFleur will present the Exemplary Student Award with the recipient winning a tuition scholarship.
