Men's basketball to open season with exhibition on Sunday

The 2002-03 men’s basketball season will get underway Sunday afternoon, November 10, as the Bearcats host a talented Upstate AAU team in an exhibition game at 4 p.m. in West Gym. It is the first of two exhibition games leading into the season- and home-opener against Lafayette on November 23. Binghamton will also play Bloomsburg University on November 17.

“This is our third year playing against the AAU team and we’ve been on the shy end twice,” head coach Al Walker said. “This AAU team is a very good one. It’s made up of excellent former college players who are all trying to transition into professional careers. It will be a great opportunity to continue to see our growth as a program.”

Last year, Upstate AAU shot 64% in the second half and posted an 88-76 victory over the Bearcats.

“I’m really excited to observe and enjoy like everybody else our defensive presence. We’ve had a very good month of practice defensively, and now we will have a chance to evaluate where we are.”

The Bearcats return leading scorer (12.9) and rebounder (6.5) Jeffrey St. Fort plus six other letterwinners from last season’s 9-19 squad. Fellow senior captains Anthony Green (10.0 ppg.) and Charles Baker (5.6 ppg.) will open in the starting backcourt, and the frontcourt will feature seven-foot sophomore center Nick Billings (3.8 blocks per game).

“This year we have the kind of guys who can make a run at the conference championship,” Walker said. “If Green, Baker, St. Fort and Billings can each play 28 games, we will be a very good America East team.”
