Binghamton men's lacrosse announces captains for 2010 season

VESTAL, N.Y.--Senior defender Griffin McLoughlin, senior midfielder Drew Wichmann and senior attack Jeff Rurey have been named the Binghamton men's lacrosse team captains for the 2010 season. The trio will lead the Bearcats into their ninth season as an intercollegiate program.

“I am very pleased to announce the results of our fall 2009 captains election. Jeff Rurey, Griffin McLoughlin, and Drew Wichmann have been elected by their teammates and endorsed by our coaching staff as captains for this year," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "All of these young men epitomize what it means to be a BU student athlete."

McLoughlin has been a mainstay on the Bearcat defense the past three seasons. The past two years, he has been a consistent starter. In the classroom, McLoughlin has been named to the America East Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll each season. A political science major, he earned a 3.66 GPA during the 2009 spring semester.

Rurey has 14 career goals and has been part of the Bearcats man-up attack. In 2007, he was named to the America East Conference All-Rookie Team. Rurey has been named to the America East Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll each season and was inducted into the National College Athlete Honors Society in 2008. A management/marketing major in the School of Management, Rurey earned a 3.9 GPA last semester and holds a cumulative 3.71 career GPA.

Wichmann has 29 career points (11 goals, 19 assists) and was also named to the America East All-Rookie Team in 2007. He has been named to the America East Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll each season and was inducted into the National College Athlete Honors Society in 2008. An accounting major in the School of Management, he earned a 3.7 GPA last semester and has already secured a professional appointment in New York City upon graduation.

“Amazingly, these seniors are not the exception, they are the norm in our program," Stephenson said. "All of our seniors are terrific leaders and student athletes. This senior class has a chance to be the second consecutive group to earn top America East academic honors for all four years of their college careers."

The current senior class had a cumulative 3.6 GPA last semester and was instrumental in leading Binghamton to a conference-best 3.41 overall team GPA.
