Release: April 26, 2008 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Men's lacrosse beats Hartford 10-5, clinches spot in America East Tournament Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore attackmen Chris Welch (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Jeff Rurey (Vestal, N.Y.) each scored twice, leading Binghamton (4-7, 2-3 AE) to a 10-5 win at Hartford (0-13, 0-5 AE) in an America East Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday. With the win, the Bearcats clinch the No. 4 spot in the upcoming conference tournament. Binghamton has now qualified for the America East Tournament five consecutive years. The Bearcats will face top-seeded and host UMBC on Thursday at 7:30 .m. Senior midfielder Stephen Smith (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists while junior attack Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y.) notched a pair of assists. Binghamton was nursing a 5-4 halftime lead when Rurey scored the lone goal of the third quarter with 3:20 remaining. Jacob Eustice pulled the Hawks to within 6-5 with 10:49 left in regulation. From there, however, the Bearcats scored four times in a span of 5:37 to ice the game. Freshman attack Adam Mazzoni (Camilus, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist during the run and Welch closed the scoring with 3:01 left in the game. Binghamton outshot Hartford 28-15 for the game. |
