Villanova holds off Bearcats 10-6
VILLANOVA, Pa.--Host Villanova (5-1) pulled away from a 4-3 lead at halftime and defeated Binghamton (1-3) 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats outscored the Bearcats 4-1 in the pivotal third quarter to build an insurmountable lead.
Sophomore attack Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) netted three goals for Binghamton and freshman Rob Williams (Fulton, N.Y.) chipped in two goals. Cavallo has now scored a hat trick in all four of the team's games, and ranks sixth in the entire nation in goals scored. Freshman Matt McNamara (Oswego, N.Y.) scored the Bearcats other goal, and also handed out three assists. McNamara ranks eighth in the nation with 2.0 assists per game.
Sophomore goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) made eight of his season-high 13 saves in the first half, and the Bearcats overcame a 3-0 Villanova lead to tie the score late in the first half. Binghamton scored three unanswered goals in a span of 2:58, the last of which tied the game at 3-3 with 37 seconds left before intermission. However, the Wildcaats gained back the advantage just seven seconds later, though, and maintained the slim margin at halftime.
Villanova scored three more goals in the first 5:32 of the third quarter to build a 7-3 lead, and the teams then traded scores for the rest of the game. The Wildcats controlled play throughout much of the game, taking 14 of 20 faceoff opportunities and scooping 45 ground balls, compared to 28 for Binghamton.
After playing their first four games on the road, the Bearcats will return home to face Colgate on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Binghamton was 2-3 at home last season while drawing more than 150 fans per game.
