Binghamton clinches America East Tournament berth with 6-3 win at Quinnpiac
HAMDEN, Conn.--Sophomore Rob Williams (Fulton, N.Y.) scored a team-high two goals and junior goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) made 12 saves, leading Binghamton (3-8, 3-2 AE) to a 6-3 win at Quinnipiac (2-10, 1-4 AE) in an America East Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bearcats clinch their second consecutive berth in the America East Conference Tournament.
"Our guys stepped it up today and Kevin was absolutely unbelievable in goal today," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "Our backs were to the wall today and we responded."
With the score deadlocked 1-1 after a quarter of play, sophomore midfielder Jeff Santucci (Cicero, N.Y.) and Williams each scored in the second quarter, giving Binghamton a 3-1 lead at the half. Williams, freshman midfielder Stephen Smith (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and junior forward Phil Cavallo (Cedarhurst, N.Y.) all scored in the third period as the Bearcats went up 6-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
Quinnipiac outshot Binghamton 34-20, including 20-9 in the second half. McKeown, however, made eight of his 12 stops in the second half to preserve the win.
"There's no question that this was Kevin's best game of the season," Stephenson said.
The Bearcats close out their regular season at Stony Brook next Saturday at 3 p.m.
