Quotes from the Binghamton Men's and Women's Lacrosse Preseason Media Day
The Binghamton men's and women's lacrosse teams met with the local media during Monday's practice at the Binghamton Sports Complex. Head Coach Ed Stephenson is in his sixth season with the men's team while Emily Edmonston starts her third season with the women's program.
This marks the first year that both teams have been able to practice in the Binghamton Indoor Sports Complex, a two-year old venue which boast a full-length turf field.
Men's head coach Ed Stephenson
"We have to be mentally focused for every game this season. Those 60 minutes are the most important thing in our lives at that point. We had some great wins last season and we had some tough loses. Stony Brook and Colgate were (both) one-goal loses to teams at the Top-20 level. With the wins we had earlier in the year, those wins would have put us--potentially--into the NCAA Tournament picture. We were right there and we let it slip a little bit."
"We had a pretty young team last year. I think this year we are more talented. We have upgraded the schedule again this year with the addition of Virginia and Syracuse. We still have Cornell and Hobart and our league (America East Conference) potentially could have four-to-five Top 20 teams."
"We want to be in great condition for the start of the season. We are getting there. Primarily, we want to stay healthy. Practicing here (Binghamton Indoor Sports Complex) has been great for us. It's cut down on guys getting banged up and we are looking to be at full strength when the season starts in two weeks."
Senior attack Matt McNamara
"We are a very deep team this year. Everyone is competing hard for a starting position right now because we have a lot of talent. We don't know who our first attack line, midfield or defense is right now. That's a problem we like to have."
Junior Stephen Smith
"Our schedule is great this year. The (America East Conference) is incredible this year. The top four teams should be in the Top 20 and we are really excited about facing national champion Virginia and Syracuse in the (Carrier) Dome."
Senior defender Tom Wilmot
"Our freshman should play a very big role on our team this year. We have a lot of good young guys who hopefully can step in right away."
Women's head coach Emily Edmonston
"I definitely have the strongest group since I've been here. I think in terms of depth we look pretty good. Having this facility (Binghamton Indoor Sports Complex) and having the full field this year has given us a chance to get in better condition. With the quality of student-athletes we have, I am anticipating us having our best start."
"We have seven freshman who have brought a lot to the competitive value of the program. We only lost one senior--who was a very good player--but we return everyone else. The talent level has definitely improved."
Senior attack Heather Grose
"We have always had hard workers but the skill level of the team has improved. I think that is really going to help us this year. It's also been great to practice here (Binghamton Indoor Sports Complex) instead of being in a gym. Our team has really bonded since the fall."
