Binghamton men's lacrosse rallies to defeat Sacred Heart 10-8 for fourth straight win
FAIRFIELD, CONN.-- Freshman attack Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y.) scored the tying goal and assisted on the game winner, leading Binghamton (4-1) to 10-8 come-from-behind win at Sacred Heart (0-5) on Saturday. The win is the fourth straight for the Bearcats, who entered the game as one of the first two teams receiving votes in both the USILA/STX and Inside Lacrosse Top 20 polls.
Mulheron finished the day with two goals and three assists. Freshman attack Jake Boyce (Pittsford, N.Y.) netted a career-high three goals while junior midfielder Jeff Santucci (Cicero, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist.
"We knew we had to attack the net late in the game since we were behind," head coach Ed Stephenson said. "This was a great game for our freshman forwards. (Mulheron and Boyce) combined for five goals and eight points. There's no question that this was Jake's best game of the season."
Binghamton got off to a promising start, going up 4-1 after one quarter of play. Mulheron scored the first Bearcat goal with 9:07 left in the quarter and assisted on the final score of the period by junior attack Nate Kerstein (Rochester, N.Y.) with just 17 seconds remaining.
The host Pioneers, however, trimmed the deficit to 6-4 at the half and went up 8-7 through three quarters of play. After outshooting Sacred Heart 10-7 in the first quarter, the Bearcats were outshot 16-6 in the second and third quarters combined. Matthew Robideau was the offensive spark plug for Sacred Heart, collecting all three of his goals and his lone assist during the middle two quarters of play.
That set the stage for Mulheron's fourth-quarter heroics. He scored an unassisted goal with 10:46 left to go and set up junior attack Rob Willams (Fulton, N.Y.), who fired home the game winner with 7:29 remaining. Sacred Heart was called for a penalty in the final minute and Santucci took advantage, adding a man-up goal with just 38 seconds left in the game. The Bearcats outshot the Pioneers 10-1 in the decisive fourth quarter.
For the game, the shot count was 26-25 Binghamton. Senior goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) recorded eight saves.
In the face-off circle, freshman J.P. Wioncek (Beverly, Mass.) won 19 of 22 draws.
Binghamton travels to Princeton next weekend for games against Bellarmine on Friday at 5 p.m. and the host Tigers on Sunday at 2 p.m.
