men's lacrosse loses 11-8 at Vermont in AE opener
BURLINGTON, Vt.-- Derek Lichtfuss scored eight goals and Drew
Phillie added eight assists, leading Vermont (2-7, 1-0 AE) to
an 11-8 win over visiting Binghamton (2-7, 0-1 AE) in an America
East Confernece men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon at
at Moulton Winder Field. The loss in the third straight setback
for the Bearcats.
The eight goals by Lichtfuss is the most ever scored in a game
against Binghamton. In addition, the eight assists by Phillie
also sets the single-game opponent record against the Bearcats.
For the Bearcats, senior attack Jeff
Rurey and freshman attack Matt
Springer each scored twice. Junior midfielder Frank
Donlon added a goal and an assist.
Lichtfuss scored four times in the opening 15 minutes as the
Catamounts jumped out to a 5-1 lead. All four of his goals were
assisted by Phillie.
Binghamton cut the lead to
5-3 late in the second quarter on goals by Rurey and Springer.
Lichtfuss, however, netted a pair of goals in the final 30 seconds,
giving Vermont a 7-3 lead at the break. Phillie assisted on the
second goal, which came with just three seconds remaining before
The seventh goal by Lichtfuss put the Catamounts up 8-3 early
in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Lichtfuss and Phillie
scored 28 seconds apart, stretching the lead to 10-5 with 8:22
left in regulation.
Vermont outshot Binghamton by just 31-30 for the game but won
15 of the 23 faceoffs.
Binghamton hosts Siena on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
