Binghamton men's soccer team to play Rochester and Syracuse in exhibition games
Directions to the David L. Emerson Soccer Farm
VESTAL, N.Y.-- The Binghamton men's soccer team, which reports back to campus on Monday, will have two exhibition games before kicking off its 2005 season. The Bearcats host Rochester on Tuesday, August 23 at 5 p.m. at the West Gym Field and will face Syracuse on Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m. in Oxford, N.Y.
Binghamton and Rochester have never squared off in men's soccer. The Division III Yellow Jackets are coming off a 14-2-4 season in 2004.
"We are very excited about facing Rochester," head coach Paul Marco said. "They are a solid team and will bring a lot of players down to face us."
The meeting with Syracuse, which went 5-12 last year, marks the first time the two teams have met since 1976. In regular season games, Binghamton has won three of four previous encounters against the Orangemen.
The game against Syracuse also marks the third straight season Binghamton has held a game at the David L. Emerson Soccer Farm in Oxford. The Bearcats tied Penn State 1-1 in 2003 and defeated Colgate 3-2 last season.
"Syracuse is a team we faced in the spring and they played very well," Marco said. "It will be great to face them at a fantastic facility."
The Bearcats return seven starters and 18 letterwinners from last season's squad that finished 11-2-8, was the America East Conference runner-up and was ranked nationally in both the NSCAA/adidas and College Soccer News polls for several weeks during the season.
Binghamton opens its 2005 regular season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. against Furman in the opening round of the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational.
