Seen and
Heard during the America East Quarterfinals
Binghamton
defeated New Hampshire 3-1 in the America East quarterfinals
on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the win,
the Bearcats head to Albany on Wednesday for the semifinals at
1 p.m. There were several storylines from the win over the Wildcats.
Cody in the Clutch
Senior midfielder Cody Germain continues to be one of
the Bearcats' most reliable players in the postseason. In eight
career America East Tournament games, he has three goals, all
of which have been game winners, and an assist. In addition,
Germain has been named to the America East Conference All-Tournament
team in 2006 and 2007.
In 2005, Germain scored the Bearcats' second goal in their 4-1
win at UMBC in the America East semifinals. Two years ago, he
assisted on Joey Neilson's game-tying goal against Boston in
the semifinals. Binghamton went on to win that game in a penalty-kick
shootout. Last year, Germain scored the game winner in the Bearcats'
1-0 win against UMBC in the semifinals.
"I love the postseason," Germain said. "I've been
waiting all year for that goal. It was really important for us
to come back and get our confidence back after the Maine loss
(last weekend)."
Giving and Taking
Until Saturday night, junior forward Cameron Keith had
not recorded a point in postseason play. He made up for it in
a big way by having a part in all three Binghamton goals. His
four-point effort gives him 19 points for the season (eight goals,
three assists).
"Camy was great," head coach Paul Marco said. "He
was great at bringing other guys into the game. He was good in
the box and covered ground. I thought he played very well."
Answering Quickly
When New Hampshire cut the Binghamton lead to 2-1 midway through
the first half, it took the Bearcats less than a minute to get
the goal back. Keith found senior midfielder Darren McAllister
in front of the goal, extending the lead back to two goals.
"All it takes is one goal for a team to get back in the
game," McAllister said. "That gave us a kick in the
behind that we really needed. Our reaction to the goal was magnificent.
We got right on the ball."
"I thought we had a great response to their goal,"
Marco said. "I really liked the way we came right back."
Help for the Hooligans
As usual, the BU Soccer Hooligans were in full force for the
game on Saturday. They did, however, have two extra people helping
them cheer on the Bearcats. Former players Matt Narode
and Adam Chavez, both of whom graduated last spring, were
in the stands. Chavez tried to get some of his own cheers going
(including one for yours truly when I was on the sidelines during
the second half) but to no avail. Narode, however, stood next
to Hooligan President Erwin Seguia so he was more in tune with
the the traditional cheers.
