This Day
in Men's Soccer History: September 29, 2002
When
Paul Marco began his first season at Binghamton in 2002, two
of his players from West Virginia ended up joining him. One of
those players was Charles Darkwah, who would be the America East
Striker of the Year two seasons later. Yet there was a second
player who also made the switch to Binghamton and played a major
role in the Bearcats' first-ever America East Conference game.

Looking
Back
On
Friday night against Cornell, junior goalkeeper Jason Stenta
tied Adam Napell (1986-89) for the program record of 25.0 shutouts.
Since taking over as the starting goalkeeper on Sept. 3, 2006,
Stenta has posted a record of 28-11-7. His first career shutout
was a 0-0 tie against Lehigh on Sept. 13, 2006. Between that
game and the win over the Big Red on Friday, much has transpired.

Senior
Spotlight: Barry Neville
It
was November 4, 2006 and the Binghamton men's soccer team was
hosting Vermont in the America East finals. After a scoreless
90 minutes, the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick with 54
seconds left in the first sudden-death overtime period. With
a championship at stake, it took someone with a calm demeanor
to come through under tremendous pressure. Barry Neville was
just that person.

Keys Please
Of
all of the cheers and chants the BU Soccer Hooligans had stored
up for Friday night's home opener, one moment in particular stood
out. In the final minute of the game, the student fan club took
out their keys and started jingling them, signifying that it
was time for the opposing team to go home.

A Tale
of Two Games
Freshman
Andy Tiedt's first experience of a Binghamton University
soccer game at the Bearcats' Sports Complex was last Homecoming.
He was a senior at Akron (N.Y.) High School and watched from
the stands as the Bearcats beat Boston 2-1 in overtime. Needless
to say, his second experience at Binghamton home game could not
have been more different. Tiedt wasn't in the stands on Friday
night against Bucknell--he was the leading scorer on the field.

The Shot
Andy
Tiedt and Kyle Kucharski may have played a part in more of the
goals against Bucknell, but the highlight of the Bearcats' 3-1
win was unquestionably Ryan Tomko's 25-yard blast in the
75th minute. The goal broke open a tight game and produced a
highlight sure to make the end-of-the-year video.

Update: Bryan Arnault
For
four years, Bryan Arnault and the Binghamton Bearcats
played some of their most memorable games against Boston University.
Three years in a row (2004-06), the Bearcats and Terriers met
in the America East playoffs and had to go to a decisive shootout
each time. In a strange twist of fate, Arnault is now in his
second year at the Boston University School of Law and often
goes to Nickerson Field to watch the Terriers play.

Peter
Sgueglia's first college soccer game involving Binghamton came
in the 2004 America East semifinals. He was the leading scorer
for the Albany Great Danes that season, and it was his goal midway
through the first half that put the visiting Bearcats in a 1-0
hole. Binghamton came back to win that game 3-1 but their fortunes
the following two years ironically had a lot to do with Sgueglia.

From
2002-05, Danilo was what head coach Paul Marco referred
to as the engine of the Bearcats. As the central midfielder,

was a perfect preview of forward Charles Darkwah's final season.
Although he had led the team in goals during the 2003 campaign,
Darkwah had his sights on an even better season his senior year.
