MEN'S SOCCER DAILY UPDATE

Bearcats Supporting Bearcats

This past weekend, the men's soccer team's win over UMBC was only the third biggest story on campus. That didn't, however, bother the team one bit. In fact the men's soccer team played a role in supporting both the America East champion men's cross country team as well as the women's soccer team, which earned a trip to the conference title game with their thrilling shootout win over Maine this past Sunday.

Supporting other programs is nothing out of the ordinary for the Binghamton men's soccer team. In fact, it is something that comes quite naturally.

"We are all in the same department," senior back Kyle Kucharski said. "We all go to the same school so we like to support each other. You get to know just about everyone on all of the other teams so along with being athletes, you get to be friends with them."

Two years ago, when Rory Quiller won the pole vault title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field championships, our department had a welcome home press conference for him. Everyone in the athletic department was invited and each member of the local media was present. Even though they just came from training, coach Paul Marco and the entire men's soccer team also came to the event.

"We wanted to honor our first (Division I) national champion," Marco said afterwards. "It's certainly something all of our student athletes are looking up to. Anytime you are honoring someone, there is a little bit of inspiration you take back in your own lives and your own sport. Certainly I think our guys got that message."

This past weekend, the men's soccer team continued their tradition of being there for other teams. Our department organized a welcome home gathering for the men's cross country team on Saturday night. The bus would not get back until 10:30, long after the men's soccer team had finished off their game against UMBC, as well as their postgame tailgate. When the bus finally pulled into the Events Center parking lot, Coach Marco and several of the men's soccer players were there to great them.

"I was delighted for them," senior goalkeeper Jason Stenta said. "They were there supporting us when we won the America East (in 2006) so it was a great feeling watching Chris Gaube walk out of the bus with the America East trophy. I am very happy for them."

"I was glad that most of our guys stuck around to welcome them back," Marco said. "It was fantastic to see that team go up to Vermont and do as great as they did. It is something that we all strive to do. (Head coach) Annette (Acuff) has done a first class job."

On Sunday afternoon, the men's soccer team was back at the Bearcats Sports Complex. This time, however, they were in the stands watching the women's team beat Maine to advance to next week's championship game in Boston.

In the decisive shootout, senior goalkeeper Jen McEachron made a clutch save while senior back Nicole Montoya scored the clinching goal.

"I was very happy for Nicole scoring the game-winning goal in the shootout," Stenta said. "Jen also made a great save."
