Bearcats hand Albany first conference loss, 1-0

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y.--A 30-yard kick by junior forward Stephen Bruce (Buckie, Scotland/Buckie Community) found the top right corner of the net and host Binghamton (7-2-3, 1-1-1 AE) edged first-place Albany (5-5-2, 2-1-1 AE) in an America East match on Saturday afternoon at West Gym Field.

"I really can't say enough about Stephen's goal," BU head coach Paul Marco said. "That was just an unbelievable goal."

Bruce took a pass from junior midfielder Charles Darkwah (Toronto, Ontario/Bathulst Heights) in the 11th minute and fired a long ball that sailed past the Albany goalkeeper for the game's only score. Binghamton's defense stymied the Great Danes for most of the game, as Albany managed just two shots on goal and was outshot 8-4 in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Gonet (Refrewshire, Scotland/Langbank) recorded two saves in posting his eighth shutout of the season.

"We thought we had a good game plan coming in," Marco said. "We weren't sure how Albany would respond, and they responded quite well. However, they didn't get a lot of shots on goal, and that's what our game plan was designed to do. Our center midfielders and defenders played extremely well today."

Junior midfielder Savvas Theofilou (Nicosia, Cyprus) had two shots for Albany and junior goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul (Bronx, N.Y./Martin Luther King) had two saves.

Binghamton takes to the road for a 7 p.m. contest with Hartford on Wednesday evening before returning home next Saturday to take on Boston University at 1 p.m. on Family Weekend at Binghamton.

NOTES: Binghamton's five-game unbeaten streak is its longest since 1998 ... Gonet needs just two more shutouts to tie the individual mark of 10 set by Adam Napell in 1987 ... the team record is 11 shutouts, set in 1986.
